The slinger/signaller plays a vital role in lifting operations, acting as the direct link between the crane operator and the ground team. Responsible for attaching loads, ensuring balance and security, and directing movements through clear communication, they are essential to the safe execution of lifting tasks on site.

This NPORS N402 certification course equips learners with the skills and knowledge to perform slinging and signalling duties safely and efficiently in line with current industry practices.

What You’ll Learn:

Training includes both classroom instruction and hands-on practical exercises, with learners applying theory in real or simulated lifting operations.

  • The slinger/signaller’s role and legal responsibilities
  • Identifying lifting accessories and understanding their uses
  • Conducting pre-use checks and removing unsafe equipment from service
  • Assessing loads, identifying centres of gravity, and estimating weights
  • Setting up safe work areas, exclusion zones, and identifying hazards
  • Securing loads correctly using appropriate lifting gear
  • Providing accurate and safe signals to crane operators using industry-standard hand and verbal communication
  • Responding to emergencies and following shutdown procedures
  • Environmental factors affecting lifting operations

Assessment & Certification:

Learners will be assessed through practical demonstrations and a written test. Successful participants will receive one of the following:

  • NPORS/CSCS Trained Operator Card (valid for 2 years, renewable upon NVQ completion)
  • NPORS Traditional Operator Card (valid for 3–5 years depending on industry requirements)

Who is this course for?

This course is intended for individuals involved in lifting operations who need formal training and certification to work as a slinger/signaller. No prior qualifications are required, though familiarity with site operations is beneficial.

Pre-Requisites
  • Learners must be physically fit and free from any conditions that could affect safe participation
  • For on-site training, clients must provide a suitable classroom and safe, pre-assessed training area
  • A current Health, Safety & Environmental (HS&E) test pass may be required for CSCS-affiliated cards
Course Length
  • Novice: 2 days (max? delegates)
