Roller (A31) – CPCS
Roller (A31) - CPCS
A31

A ride-on roller is essential for compacting materials such as soil, gravel, sand, and road surfaces using various techniques like vibration, kneading, and direct pressure. These machines play a vital role in increasing soil density and ensuring ground stability on-site.

Operating a roller safely and productively requires more than just driving ability—operators must understand the machine’s setup, functions, and risks.

The CPCS A31 Ride-On Roller certification equips learners with the core knowledge and practical ability to operate rollers efficiently and safely. This course is specifically designed for those with little or no prior experience in working with ride-on rollers.

What You'll Learn:

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand health and safety legislation related to roller operation and apply safe working practices on site
  • Identify and explain key machine components, controls, and functions using the manufacturer’s guidance
  • Conduct thorough pre-start and running checks, and set the roller for site travel and compaction duties
  • Operate the roller safely across various terrains, including undulating ground and confined areas using forward and reverse controls
  • Perform compaction tasks on different materials, including working up to supported and unsupported edges and around radii, to meet specification standards
  • Follow correct procedures for loading, unloading, shutdown, and securing of the machine, including transportation practices

Training Delivery and Assessment

Training is delivered through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical exercises at one of our accredited training centres. The course concludes with:

  • A practical observation assessment
  • A written theoretical test

Learners must pass both components to be awarded the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card, valid for two years.

To progress to a Blue Competent Operator Card, learners must complete the relevant NVQ within that two-year period.

Levels of Training Offered:
Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for novice plant operators who need to develop or formalise their skills in operating ride-on rollers. While prior machinery experience is helpful, it is not required.

Pre-Requisites
  • Learners must have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Operatives test within two years of taking the CPCS theory test.
  • Learners must be physically fit to participate in practical elements of the training and should inform trainers in advance of any health conditions, special requirements, or medication that could affect performance.
Course Length
  • Novice: 4 days (max 2 learners)
  • Intermediate: 2 days (max 2 learners)

*The duration may change depending on learner numbers
