Transporting plant machinery safely to and from site is a high-risk task that requires precision, planning, and full compliance with legal standards. Loading errors or poor securing can lead to serious incidents involving operatives, drivers, or other road users.

This NPORS-accredited N120 course equips learners with the essential knowledge and hands-on skills needed to safely load, secure, and unload plant machinery in line with industry regulations—including the Department for Transport’s “Safety of Loads on Vehicles” code of practice.

What You’ll Learn:

This course combines classroom-based instruction with practical, real-world loading scenarios. Learners will learn both the theory and operational techniques under the supervision of experienced trainers.

  • Safety legislation relevant to plant transport and loading
  • Understanding transporter vehicle types and key components
  • Pre-use inspections of loading equipment and securing accessories
  • Configuring vehicles and loading zones to reduce risk
  • Planning and preparing for safe loading/unloading procedures
  • Identifying and avoiding work area hazards (e.g. overhead lines, buried services)
  • Communication protocols for directing and coordinating movements
  • Properly positioning, securing, and balancing loads for highway travel
  • Completing shutdown and post-operation safety procedures
Assessment & Certification:

Learners must successfully complete a practical test and written knowledge assessment. Upon passing, they will receive one of the following certifications:

  • NPORS/CSCS Trained Operator Card – valid for 2 years (with the option to upgrade via NVQ)
  • NPORS Traditional Operator Card – valid for 3 or 5 years, depending on industry requirements

Who is this course for?

This course is intended for plant operators responsible for loading and securing plant onto transport vehicles. No prior experience is required, though some knowledge of plant equipment is helpful.

Pre-Requisites
  • Learners must be medically fit and capable of carrying out physical tasks
  • For on-site training, clients must provide a suitable classroom, power supply, and a safe, pre-assessed practical area
  • Learners should inform trainers in advance of any special requirements or limitations
Course Length
  • Novice: 2 days (max 3 learners)
  • Refresher: 1 day (max 3 learners)
  • EWT: 2.5 hours (max 6 learners)
