Excavator as a Crane – NPORS
Excavator as a Crane - NPORS
N100

A 360 Excavator can be a practical alternative to a crane where space or equipment availability is an issue. However, when an excavator is used as a crane, it introduces additional risks not present in purpose-designed lifting equipment. These include environmental factors, compatibility issues, and a lack of operator training. Additional machine checks and specific training are required in line with health and safety regulations, such as fitting the machine with acoustic warnings and boom-lowering systems.

This NPORS Excavator as Crane (N100) certification provides the required knowledge and skills to safely use a 360 Excavator for lifting operations. It is specifically designed for plant operators who already hold an Excavator 360 card and need additional training and assessment to operate it as a crane.

What You'll Learn

By the end of this training, you will be able to:

  • Identify and explain various lifting procedures, their categories, and related manufacturer requirements and legislation
  • Recognise centres of gravity and estimate load weights using SWL and lifting capacity charts
  • Assess load integrity and perform safe, controlled trial lifts and movements
  • Identify overhead and proximity hazards, and apply environmental awareness during lifting operations
  • Communicate effectively with the Slinger Signaller using standard signal codes and hand signals
  • Ensure proper machine setup, equipment condition, and safe use of lifting attachments
  • Follow end-of-shift procedures and secure equipment appropriately

Training Delivery and Assessment

  • Practical and theory-based tutorials
  • Training delivered by occupationally competent and technically experienced instructors
  • Includes a written theory test and practical observation
  • Assessed in accordance with NPORS/CSCS or NPORS Traditional card standards

On successful completion:

  • Construction industry learners will receive the NPORS/CSCS Trained Operator Card, valid for two years
  • Non-construction industry learners can obtain the NPORS Traditional Operator Card, valid for three or five years, based on company or sector needs
