Excavators are powerful machines requiring accurate guidance and coordination—especially when working near underground services or within confined areas. The role of the Excavation Marshal, also known as the Banksperson, is critical to ensuring safety, communication, and correct positioning of excavation equipment.

This NPORS N027 certification course provides the theoretical understanding and practical skills necessary to supervise and assist in the safe movement and operation of mechanical excavators on site.

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of an Excavation Marshal / Banksperson within current health and safety legislation
  • Interpret and apply method statements, risk assessments, permits to work, and safe systems of work
  • Identify excavation equipment components, safety features, and control functions
  • Carry out pre-excavation inspections, recognise underground service hazards, and interpret service drawings and utility plans
  • Implement safe digging practices, maintain exclusion zones, and apply hazard awareness for operatives and third parties
  • Use standard signal codes and communication techniques to manage site communication and coordination
